Endangered Species

One in four mammals, one in eight birds, one third of all amphibians and 70% of the world’s assessed plants are now in jeopardy according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary are involved with programs and management of threatened and endangered species in partnership with national and international organisations. Thirty percent of the species Zoos Victoria cares for require urgent saving, with classifications ranging from vulnerable to extinct in the wild. (A complete list of species and classifications is available here)

Zoos Victoria's animal collection provides the foundation for all of its activities and plays a vital role in delivering conservation outcomes. The collection contributes directly as part of a breeding program to reintroduce animals to the wild and acts as a ‘flagship’ for nature by highlighting the environmental threats faced by animals and promoting solutions.
