Zoos Victoria is committed to conservation at a local, national and international level. This commitment is realised in a variety of ways, from financial support to providing staff resources to contribute directly to conservation programs.
Zoos Victoria focuses on a select number of priority programs to ensure it can make significant contributions to these programs on a long-term basis.
One in four mammals, one in eight birds, one third of all amphibians and 70% of the world's assessed plants are now in jeopardy according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
Zoos Victoria's animal collection provides the foundation for all of its activities and plays a vital role in delivering conservation outcomes. The collection contributes directly as part of a breeding program to reintroduce animals to the wild and acts as a ‘flagship' for nature by highlighting the environmental threats faced by animals and promoting solutions.
Much of Australia's native wildlife is unique to this continent, having evolved over the past 50 million years largely in isolation to the rest of the world.
