Community Conservation Programs

Zoos Victoria, along with a broad and diverse range of environmental organisations, is committed to inspiring and empowering individuals and communities to contribute to our environment's future. Our collective goal is to mobilise change in our communities to reduce our overall impact on the environment.

The loss of biodiversity across the world is arising mainly from:

  • Habitat loss and fragmentation
  • Introduction of alien or exotic species
  • Over-harvesting
  • Climate change
  • Pollution and disease

Many of these threats are driven by our own actions. All of us – individuals, households, communities, businesses and governments – need to act now to reduce our impact on the environment and reverse the trend towards wildlife extinctions. Start today by getting involved:

Directly Support one of our Conservation Programs

Zoos Victoria supports conservation and science programs in Australia and Internationally that are conserving our wildlife. We work with partners to make a positive difference to wildlife and communities that share their environment.

One of the most significant ways you can help us ensure the ongoing success of our projects is to make a donation. 100% of every donation received is directly distributed to the conservation, science and research programs.

Join Planet Keeper

Planet Keeper is an exciting partnership between students, teachers and Zoos Victoria which raises awareness and support for endangered species.

Students learn about these species by interacting with zoo educators at the Zoo’s Education and Leaning Centre and taking part in a behind-the-scenes visit, ‘meet the keeper’ talk or radio tracking activity. With the direction of their teachers, students are then encouraged to share what they have learnt within their school or local community to raise awareness and funds to support Zoos Victoria's conservation programs for these species.

Become a Friend of the Zoo Guide or Volunteer

Zoos Victoria is fortunate to have a dedicated group of volunteers that help us make a difference every day of the year. Whether talking to our visitors and inspiring them about wildlife and conservation or making enrichment devices to enhance the health and wellbeing of the wildlife in our care, joining Friends of the Zoo is a hands-on way to get involved.

Join the Frogs Australia Network

Zoos Victoria’s newest community project is the coordination of the Frogs Australia Network, a web-based network that uses its website to increase the quality, accessibility and availability of frog conservation information. The website features:

  • A searchable database of all Australian frogs detailing their conservation status, key threatening processes and distribution
  • The capacity to search for frog community groups and interested people in your local area
  • News and events listings of frog-related activities

Becoming a member will keep you up-to-date on frog conservation issues and opportunities to become involved.
