Zoos Victoria manages three great zoos: Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary, and Werribee Open Range Zoo. Each zoo has its own focus, but all three work towards the goal of building enduring relationships between people and wildlife for a future in which people live in balance with the natural world.
Achievements in Ecotourism
Healesville Sanctuary is dedicated to remaining at the forefront of ecological sustainability in the tourism and attractions market. Recently the Sanctuary was awarded Advanced Accreditation in Ecotourism by Ecotourism Australia.
This world-first accreditation program is designed to provide travellers, local communities and industry with an assurance that certified products are backed by a commitment to best practice ecological sustainability, natural area management, and the provision of quality tourism experiences.

Originally called the Australian Institute of Anatomy, Healesville Sanctuary was founded by Dr Colin MacKenzie, who in 1921 was granted 70 acres of land, to study native fauna for the purpose of medical research.
