Trail of the Elephants

Melbourne Zoo’s three newest residents, Dokkoon, Kulab and Num-Oi, are making a big impact with visitors of all ages. Come and meet them in the Trail of the Elephants in the Asian Rainforest precinct.


Orang-utan Sanctuary

Melbourne Zoo’s Orang-utan Sanctuary features an elevated treetops boardwalk that brings you face-to-face with these magnificent primates as they climb, play, nest and feed high above the ground.


Butterfly House

You’ll be surrounded by hundreds of colourful butterflies in flight or at rest among lush vegetation in this magnificent tropical glasshouse. All the butterfly species are native to tropical and subtropical Australia, so the Butterfly House is kept at about 28 degrees year-round. 

Next door, in the World of Bugs, you can see a wide selection of fascinating Australian insects including stick insects and the Giant Burrowing Cockroach.


Gorilla Rainforest

See a family of Western Lowland Gorillas, led by Rigo, an impressive Silverback male, in their tropical rainforest home. There are several viewing points into the large exhibit, where the gorillas can select shade provided by the trees canopy, sunshine and even shelter on cool days in caves with underfloor heating.


Amazing Australians

Visit the Australian Bush area at Melbourne Zoo to see Australia’s iconic wildlife including kangaroos, platypuses, wombats and koalas amid a native bushland setting.
