New Watersmart Garden Launched

Werribee Open Range Zoo has just launched a new $300,000 Watersmart Garden.

The Watersmart Garden is made up of a series of beautiful, and functional garden experiences that aim to show that it is possible to use less water and still have a beautiful garden.

Four model gardens, the Display, Future, Surfaces and Indigenous Gardens, and two interpretive spaces, demonstrate the aesthetic and water saving possibilities of planting a watersmart garden.

  • The Display Garden brings together a range of beautifully sculpted and colourfully diverse water-saving plants from Australia and around the world.
  • The Future Garden has been designed to work as a scientific trial garden, demonstrating and measuring the effectiveness of existing technologies in water saving.
  • The Surfaces Garden will explore alternative materials to the water hungry lawn
  • The Indigenous Garden will feature plants native to the Werribee area, showcasing the seasonal colour and diversity of local flora

The development also opens access to the existing boardwalks through the Werribee wetlands to the Werribee River. Allowing zoo visitors to explore an important eco-system, understand the impacts of flood and drought on the environment and connect with the regions native wildlife.
