The Zoo's newest mother, Asian Elephant Dokkoon, is recuperating in the barn after a strenuous delivery early on Saturday morning.
Keepers are monitoring Dokkoon's recovery and the progress of her female calf around the clock.
Curator Jan Steele says that the calf is doing very well, feeding enthusiastically and regularly, and showing lots of energy and curiosity.
She explains that the mother and baby need some quiet time for mother and baby to bond and so that Dokkoon can fully recover from the birth of her 100kg-plus calf.
Jan Steele says that if all continues to go well, it may be possible for Dokkoon and her calf to go outdoors later this week.
