The Accelerated Learning Conferences at Melbourne Zoo are a whole day experience designed to stimulate interest and curiosity in conservation. Through the presentation of challenging tasks, the students will be supported to question, gather relevant information and develop ideas. The conference allows students to connect and collaborate with like-ability peers across a range of disciplines. Supporting the theory of multiple intelligences; activities have been designed so that students will be working in teams to complete unique tasks that extend their critical thinking, skills and knowledge in all areas of the curriculum, including technology.

Students will also have the opportunity to participate in pre and post visit activities facilitated by Melbourne Zoo’s Learning Experiences. These elements will be sent to the participating schools after booking.

Savage Showdown - Grades 5/6

It’s a jungle out there; to survive you will need to be on high alert. Set in the grounds of Melbourne Zoo, students will struggle against each other and the wild for survival in an ever changing world. Are you friend or foe?  Who is your ally and whom do you eliminate? Students will face obstacles both physical and psychological throughout their fight for survival!

NB teachers and parents, we will return students/children to you in one piece.

Conservation Conflict - Years 7/8

Which side are you on? Where do you stand? Who do you believe? One thing’s for sure:  wherever you stand in the world of nature, you’re sure to find conflict! Come and delve into the most intriguing conflicts around humans and our natural world. Find your own answer to the biggest and most polarizing questions out there! Is extinction really a bad thing? Is global warming real? And should we let all animals be wild?

Unleashed, Untamed or Unfair? - Years 9/10

It is said, to understand someone you need to ‘walk in their shoes’ how then, do you understand an animal’s journey?  How do we display equity and justice to the animal kingdom? Has the animal kingdom become the forgotten refugees? The students will be challenged to look at the world from a different perspective, one that will encompass the obvious and the unexpected. Students will be challenged to reconsider their firmly held values. Is compromising such a bad thing?
