Werribee Open Range Zoo’s 13 week old baby rhino has a name!

Zoo Members were invited to submit a name for the baby rhino and an incredible 1027 entries were received. The vets and keepers shortlisted these down to five names, which more than 2700 members of the public voted for.

Voting closed on Sunday 25 August, with Kipenzi as the clear favourite.

This name was submitted by Zoo Member, Christine Stephens.

Congratulations Christine and thanks to everyone who submitted and voted on the names, we were overwhelmed by the response.

Kipenzi means ‘precious one’ in Swahili.

With only 20,000 Southern White Rhinos left in the wild every rhino that’s born is precious, making Kipenzi a very fitting name for the young rhino calf.
