Celebrating our Volunteers

12 May 2013

This week is National Volunteer Week, Australia’s largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism. Today, there are more than 220 people volunteering annually at Healesville Sanctuary, more than double the Sanctuary’s own staff numbers.

“Everyone who works with our volunteers helps harness, shape and influence the efforts of an extraordinary kind of human resource,” Mr Glen Holland, Healesville Sanctuary’s Director said, “This week gives us a chance to reflect on the valuable contribution each volunteer provides to us, by offering their time, skills and passion, continuing to demonstrate Australia’s proud culture of giving. It is also a time to recognise their efforts.”

Volunteers deliver an estimated 420 hours per week, 1820 hours per month or a massive 22,000 hours per year to the organisation.

“Volunteers strengthen our visitor experience and make our Sanctuary vibrant,” Mr Holland said. “Today, volunteers are involved in more ways than ever before. They complete many tasks from handing out seed in Land of Parrots, staffing Lunar’s Secret Forest, preparing animal food, guiding cruise ship visitors, washing at the hospital and gardening - just to name a few. They meet and greet our visitors and there is not a day when they are not here lending a hand.

“National Volunteer Week is a chance to thank volunteers for all they do for us – although every day we appreciate their efforts."
