Copenhagen Zoo Statement

28 March 2014

At Zoos Victoria we have a commitment to act in the best interests of the animals in our care. We also believe in the responsible management of animals to ensure that we avoid breeding more animals than we can compassionately care for and for which we can provide high levels of care. We therefore do not agree with the practices undertaken by Copenhagen Zoo in relation to Marius the Giraffe and the recent death of their four lions however recognise that they, like many zoos make decisions based on their own values, challenges and cultural context.

The decision to euthanize an animal is not one that we take lightly. Our Veterinarians only have the right and permission to make the decision to euthanize an animal based on medical grounds and to end an animal’s suffering. Any requests that require consideration for non-medical euthanasia are taken very seriously and are subject to discussion and endorsement with an independent ethics committee.
