Today is the fourth anniversary of the Black Saturday bushfires which caused so much personal tragedy in Healesville Sanctuary's local community.
Sadly, 173 people lost their lives in the devastating fires and more than 2,000 homes were destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of native animals perished. The events of that day, when our staff worked tirelessly to protect our own collection animals while trying to save so many native wildlife affected have stayed with all of us.
Healesville Sanctuary pays tribute to those in our team and in our local community who are still feeling the effects of Black Saturday.
The videos and photos above feature our vet team, keepers, wildlife conservation experts and others sharing their stories of how wildlife were affected by bushfires.
