Zoo highlights

Werribee Open Range Zoo offers a unique opportunity to experience an African adventure closer to home and encounter the magnificent animals of the African savannah.  Our 200 hectare property is home to some of Africa’s most iconic animals, as well as wildlife from the grasslands of Asia, North America and Australia. All this, in an open range environment where the animals are given the space to behave as they would in their natural habitats.

Here are just some of the Zoo highlights and animal attractions you won’t want to miss.

  Australian Journey and Wirribi River Trail

  Werribee Open Range Zoo is famous for the natural beauty of its landscapes, ranging from the African savannah and Victorian basalt plains grasslands, to our hippopotamus marsh. Our animal exhibits resemble their natural habitats as closely as possible, so they can live and interact as they would in the wild.

  Safari Tour

  At Werribee Open Range Zoo, your general admission includes a safari bus ride across our amazing African savannah landscape. Jump on the safari bus and encounter rhinos, zebra and giraffes in stunning open range surrounds.

  Gorillas Calling

  We are home to one of the largest gorilla exhibits in the world. At 6,000 square metres, the spectacular exhibit allows silverback Motaba and his two sons the space to behave as they would in the wild.

  Kubu River Hippos

  Step into a wild African wetland at our Kubu River Hippos experience. Spanning more than three hectares, it’s a hippo paradise.

  Lions on the Edge

  Come face-to-face with a pride of lions at Lions on the Edge. This dramatic savannah landscape is home to four lions: female Jarrah, and males Tonyi, Tombo and Johari.

  Serval Cat presentation

  Don't miss our daily Serval Cat presentation. Free with general admission, this is one of the most enthralling animal presentations in Australia, enabling visitors to enter the realm of our beautiful serval cats and learn from their keepers.
